More studies to discredit aerobics
An Australian research took two groups of men in two different programs for 3 weeks:
First Group : 40 minutes of steady state aero
Second Group: 20 minutes of some other form of workout
The results of the study claimed that Group 1 gained an average of 1 lb while the latter group lost 5.5lbs of fat. 5.5lbs in 3 weeks!!! That’s almost the amount of weight loss for doing aero in a year (6.5lbs, remember?).
Now, what is that some other form of workout?… could it be the best thing to do for someone who’s caught up with the busy life in Arlington, VA.
The real secret: lift those dumbbells and engage in interval training.
That other form of workout done by the second group in an Australian study performed high intensity interval exercises. These are series of vigorous workouts interspersed by either short periods of low-intensity exercises or rests.
Resistance training is a good tandem for your interval workout because it allows you to work on your muscles. It aims to strengthen and increase muscle fiber diameter. A larger fiber diameter is a determinant for a higher resting metabolic rate.
A good Arlington, VA workout must have these two because: it takes half as much time than aero to get significant results from this (think of the study: 40 minutes of steady state aero vs. 20 minutes of that other form of workout!) AND it results to an “afterburn”. Workouts that actually work-out.
An after… what???!
Afterburn is a term for letting your body burn more calories even after exercising. High interval training combined with lifting weights can allow your body to have a 12, 24 or 36-hour metabolic boost. Pretty much like burning calories all day, minus the exercise!
